How to streamline your workday

Do you feel like you can be more effective during your workday? Are you so busy that you don’t seem to have time to enjoy life? Here’s a few ideas to streamline your workday and get some balance back:

  1. Slow down. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and it seems like you’re going around in circles, the best thing to do is slow down. Take the time to prioritise and write out a ‘to do’ list. Going faster or switching from one task to another doesn’t mean you’re more productive or that you’ll accomplish more things. Doing things right the first time will save you more time in the long run.

  2. Stop procrastinating. There are certain things about any job that are mundane. Schedule an afternoon to finish those pesky tasks, so you can move on to do the things you enjoy the most.

  3. Share the work. You don’t have to do everything. Delegate and get help from fellow employees. This facilitates teamwork and makes everyone feel like they’ve contributed, it also gives a sense of accomplishment.

  4. Simplify. Don’t overcomplicate things. As humans, we tend to make extra work for ourselves even if it’s unnecessary. If something works, don’t fix it.

  5. De-clutter. Streamlining your work space will help you focus. De-cluttering also aids in decision making, problem solving, it energises and reduces anxiety.

  6. Learn to say no more. When your workload is at its max, be assertive about saying no. Try not to over commit yourself. Not only will you feel better when you can achieve everything within the deadlines, you won’t be working crazy unsustainable hours.

  7. Use automation to your advantage. A small investment in tech can save volumes of time. It’s much easier to make changes, be more efficient and stay up-to-date. For instance, at Rise we use Hubspot which enables us to schedule social posts ahead of time.

  8. Eliminate distractions. If your personal life interferes with your job, set some boundaries. Switch your mobile phone off during work hours or use an app like Flipd; discourage frequent personal calls and delay socialising with co-workers or colleagues until your work is done.

Try doing one or two of these pointers, and hopefully your workday will become more streamlined, making it easier to be more productive at work and also enjoy life outside of it. The saying goes, work to live, not live to work.
